Chapter Twenty-Five

Toby had just finished his shift and was nudging his car out of the rooftop parking lot when his cell phone rang. "Yeah, Johnson here."

"Hey, man, this is Chuck. I think we ought to get together. I need to talk to you. It’s important. What about tonight?"

“Talk? I’ve been trying to talk to you for hours, man. Whoever took that heroin took my aunt. Did you know that? Mercy Johnson is my aunt. I swear, Chuck, if anything had happened to her, I would have come looking for you. You hear me?”

“What the hell you talking to me about that for, man? I ain’t stole no heroin. Your aunt? I didn’t know the woman was your aunt, but I didn’t take her. You need to get a grip.”

“No, you’re the one who needs to get a grip. I’m gonna meet with you, and when I do, I want to hear how it is that a few weeks ago you asked me about stealing drugs, and yesterday, somebody stole some drugs from the federal court. You see my problem, Chuck? If you aren’t involved, that’s a mighty big coincidence.”

“Yeah, well stuff happens, you hear? But Toby, there's some things about this you ought to know. You'd feel better if you knew. Safer, so to speak.”

“Safer? Now you’re threatening me, Chuck?”

“Nah, man, you know I ain’t threatening you. We go way back, Toby. Just listen to me. That’s all I’m asking. Listen, and then you can make your own decision about whether I’m involved in this thing.”

Toby paused, thinking about how to respond to trust Chuck's offer. If he refused, he would never hear Chuck’s version. Chuck was smart, but he too arrogant. If he was involved in the theft from federal court, he would show his hand somehow. Toby might get a lead . One meeting, face to face, then he and Sergeant Banks could make a decision about Chuck and his role.

"Okay, you're on. But give me time for a shower and a quick dinner. Where are you going to be?"
